How many students do you have?

ISM started in 1998 with 48 students. We currently have just over 1200 students in preschool through grade 12. The majority of our students (82%) are from Myanmar, while 11% of our students come from Korea. The remainder of our students represent 16 nationalities. Our student to teacher ratio is approximately 13:1. Many teachers have at least one myanmar assistant teacher.


What type of curriculum is used?

The curriculum at the International School of Myanmar is Standards Based, College Preparatory and follows a North American model. AP Exams are offered in the most advanced courses. All courses are taught in English, foreign languages are the only exception. The curriculum framework includes academic subjects, service learning, creative arts, sports and experiential learning opportunities which are all viewed as integral components of an holistic education.


How about sports?

ISM has an Athletic Director and a very strong sports program. We have interscholastic tournaments within the Yangon Athletic Conference in volleyball, softball, basketball, soccer, and badminton.


Any other extracurricular activities?

Students also have a number of other extracurricular activities from which to choose. Teachers offer a number of different after school clubs where students may do anything from playing a sport or starting a rock band to making jewelry. Student Council and the community service clubs are two of the more popular activities. Each spring we also offer a Week Without Walls trip for all secondary students. Middle school students go on trips to different cultural or historical sites within Myanmar, while high school students typically travel internationally.


What are the students like?

Our students are respectful of the education process, are eager to learn and are enthusiastic members of the ISM community. They have a strong work ethic and most all plan to attend university abroad. Parents are very supportive.


What are the facilities like?

ISM is located in Hlaing Township, about a 20 minute drive north of downtown Yangon. The elementary, middle, and high schools are all housed in separate and near-by purpose-built facilities. The middle and high schools are separated by a small residential area while the elementary school, which opend for at the beginning of the 2012-2013 academic year is located about a five minute walk near the main road. Each campus has a cafeteria, library, computer laboratory, playing field, playground, covered basketball/multi-purpose court and science laboratories.


Is ISM accredited?

ISM is accredited by Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and is a member of East Asian Regional Council of Overseas Schools (EARCOS).
